  1. Park the car with the good battery facing the car that needs a jump-start. Turn off the engine. Engage the parking brakes on both cars.
  2. Open both hoods. Identify the positive and negative terminals on both batteries. Make sure they’re clean.
  3. Connect one of the red clamps on the jumper cables to the positive post on the dead battery. Hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with charge.
  4. Connect the black clamp on the jumper cables to the negative post on the good battery. Connect the last clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car’s frame.
  5. Start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery first, then the one with the dead battery. It might take a little time for the battery to charge.
  6. Keep the vehicle running for a while after getting the jump to fully recharge the battery.
